Gig-economy and Freelance Work

Throughout history, technology has continually shaped the way it works in every industry. Today, when we have to work from home due to the Covid-19 epidemic, we feel the impact of technology on the working environment radically. Technology has made working from anywhere easier than ever. As the Women's Association in Technology, we say #evdekal and have been holding our meetings over social media tools such as Zoom, Google Hangouts, Whatsapp, Skype for days. The concept of gig-economy (sharing economy) emerges in this process.

The messages we send instantly reach our colleagues around the world. In this regard, OECD states that about 14% of jobs in member countries are highly automated, and 32% will be radically transformed by technological progress.

Gig-economy is a free market system in which organizations and freelancers participate in short-term work arrangements. McKinsey, on the other hand, defines this system as earning its main income from independent business. We now have access to project-based work with the flexibility to use our own working hours. “Gigging” was defined as the process of acquiring more than one self-employment at the same time.

According to Gallup data, 36% of U.S. workers were involved in the gig-economy in 2018. The size of the gig-economy, based on the principle of shared resources, is expected to reach 335 billion dollars in 2025. Thus, web developers, software developers, computer programmers will be professions that take their place in this new economy of the future. As organizations and countries race to use these new technologies to strengthen their hands in growth and competition, we stand at a critical point for these technologies to work properly for people and our planet. As the Association of Women in Technology, we are with you in this new technological process with our online training programs that we have developed to support technology experts.
